DEAD DROPS

Short notes that are too useful to delete and too unfinished to pretend they are essays. Some are questions. Some are warnings. Some are just things somebody wrote down before the coffee wore off.

Every interface teaches behavior.

If the safe action takes six clicks and the risky action takes one, the interface has already made a policy decision. It just lacked the courage to admit it.

DROP 0002

Failure has a half-life.

Wait too long to document a failure and the memory starts editing itself. Embarrassment becomes explanation. Explanation becomes inevitability. Write it down while everybody still hates it.

DROP 0003

Ask what the sensor cannot see.

A measurement system is partly defined by its blind spots. Before trusting the number, ask what would have to happen for the number to remain normal while the system is actually failing.

DROP 0004

Consensus can be a compression artifact.

If five people independently agree, that is interesting. If five people inherited the same premise, source, incentive, or dashboard, that may be one opinion wearing five badges.

DROP 0005

The spare part is part of the machine.

If a system cannot be repaired because the only replacement lives six weeks away behind a proprietary catalog number, the supply chain has been quietly incorporated into the design.

DROP 0006

Precision can camouflage ignorance.

A number with three decimal places can still be built on a bad assumption. False precision remains one of civilization's favorite costumes because it photographs beautifully in slide decks.

DROP 0007

Preserve the ugly version.

The first sketch, first test result, first failed print, first bad graph, and first contradictory note often explain the project better than the polished retrospective ever will.

DROP 0008

What changed your mind?

It may be the highest-yield interview question available. It forces a person to expose the old model, the evidence that broke it, and the mechanism by which belief actually moved.

DROP 0009

Do not automate confusion.

A fast automated process built on an unclear decision rule is merely a machine for producing ambiguous mistakes at industrial speed.

DROP 0010

Maintenance is delayed design review.

Every repair reveals what the original design assumed about access, tools, human patience, contamination, wear, documentation, and reality's general refusal to cooperate.

DROP 0011

Counterfactuals are diagnostic tools.

Ask what evidence would make the opposite conclusion reasonable. If nothing could, you may not have a conclusion. You may have a loyalty program.

DROP 0012

The future rarely arrives labeled.

Most important changes first appear as awkward prototypes, weird edge cases, hobby projects, expensive toys, or ideas respectable people dismiss because the demo still has exposed wiring.

LEAVE SOMETHING BEHIND

The wall accepts ASCII, bad jokes, mysterious handles, and evidence that people still know how to type without emoji.

The current guestbook is intentionally local-beta while the shared persistence layer is designed. We can have old-web chaos without pretending input validation was an optional 1998 aesthetic choice.
