Every new sport eventually discovers paperwork. That is what happens when the outcome matters enough that “trust us” stops being an adequate description of the contest.
Humanoid robot fighting is approaching that point quickly. Machines can be teleoperated, assisted, driven by autonomous policies, updated between matches and repaired under time limits. The more serious the competition becomes, the more important one question becomes: what exactly controlled the robot that just won?
Control mode is evidence, not branding.
Calling a robot “AI-powered” tells us almost nothing. A human pilot may provide decisions while software stabilizes the body. Motion capture may map an operator into robot movement. An autonomous policy may choose tactics while low-level controllers execute them. Those distinctions define the competitive class.
A league claiming autonomous competition should be able to demonstrate when human input was disabled. A teleoperated league should disclose the operator interface and relevant latency. A hybrid league should say which decisions belong to whom.
The answer is a provenance trail.
Before a match, record the approved software build, configuration, robot serial number, control mode and relevant hardware state. Hash the build. Synchronize clocks. Preserve operator-input logs where rules permit human control. Preserve referee events, resets, repair periods and major sensor faults.
After the match, the evidence chain should answer basic questions: did the robot run the approved build, did a prohibited control channel become active, did a team exceed repair limits, and was a scoring event genuine or a sensor fault?
Standard hardware makes hidden software more important.
URKL says competitors use the same T800 platform and are differentiated by software. That makes unlogged changes to control software functionally similar to uninspected hardware modification in motorsport. The rulebook therefore implies an audit problem even if the sport has not formalized the full solution.
Myth arrives faster than evidence.
Sports create heroes, villains and legends with breathtaking efficiency. Robot sports will do the same. Fans will freeze-frame knockdowns and build theories. That is healthy until mythology substitutes for records.
Robot fighting needs competition-grade provenance before large purses, sponsorship and serious reputational stakes make disputes expensive. Signed builds, synchronized logs, control-mode disclosure, repair records and preserved referee data are not bureaucratic decoration. They are how the sport knows what happened.
