01 / RELEASE + SUPERVISION
Know the rules that can send you backward.
Keep release paperwork and supervision conditions together. Confirm reporting dates, travel limits, testing/treatment requirements, fees, address rules, employment requirements, and who can answer questions. If a condition is unclear, get clarification from the responsible authority or qualified counsel rather than guessing.
02 / IDENTITY
Build the document stack first.
Prioritize government photo ID, Social Security documentation, birth certificate or other citizenship/identity records as applicable, release paperwork, and a stable mailing address. Missing identity documents can block work, banking, housing, benefits, and medical access.
03 / HOUSING
Stability before optimization.
Start with safe lawful housing that works with supervision and transportation realities. Ask local reentry providers, housing authorities, community organizations, and 211-style resource systems about transitional housing, rental assistance, shelters, and eligibility rules.
04 / WORK + TRAINING
Target fair-chance routes and credentials.
Prioritize employers and programs that explicitly consider applicants with records. Track identification requirements, occupational-license restrictions, transportation costs, scheduling constraints, and whether training actually maps to available jobs.
05 / BENEFITS + HEALTH
Reopen what incarceration interrupted.
Depending on eligibility and location, reentry can involve Medicaid/health coverage, SNAP or other public benefits, disability-related programs, veteran benefits, substance-use or mental-health treatment, and local assistance. Verify current rules with the responsible agency.
06 / RECORD CONSEQUENCES
Know what is restriction and what is folklore.
Employment, housing, voting, licensing, firearm, travel, and other restrictions vary by jurisdiction and case. Use current official sources or qualified legal assistance. Do not assume a restriction applies merely because somebody in a dorm, workplace, or comment thread said it does.
