A field guide for reading UAP claims without becoming either a true believer or a professional eye-roller.

The subject has accumulated seventy-plus years of reports, intelligence records, military testimony, sensor footage, folklore, deliberate fraud, honest error, genuine technical puzzles, bureaucratic secrecy, classification, media distortion, and unresolved residue. The job is not to flatten all of that into one answer. The job is to sort it.

01 / THE PROBLEM

UAP is a classification problem before it is a cosmic one.

A report becomes interesting only after the ordinary categories have been tested against the actual evidence.

What does UAP mean?

“Unidentified anomalous phenomena” is an umbrella term for observations that cannot be immediately identified with the information available. Depending on the agency and era, the working definition has emphasized aerial, airborne, transmedium, or more general anomalous observations. The label does not tell us whether the underlying event was an aircraft, balloon, bird, satellite, atmospheric effect, sensor artifact, classified program, adversary platform, deception, fabrication, unknown natural phenomenon, or something genuinely outside current technical expectations.

That distinction sounds elementary. It is also where a remarkable amount of public discussion goes off the rails. An unresolved record is sometimes treated as positive evidence for an extraordinary origin. The opposite mistake is treating every unresolved record as evidence that the witness was incompetent. Both approaches destroy information.

The useful position is more boring and more powerful: preserve the uncertainty until the evidence reduces it.

The archive contains different kinds of things.

A pilot report is not a radar track. A radar track is not a calibrated scientific observation. A leaked clip is not a complete sensor record. A sworn statement is not physical evidence. A government memo documenting a claim proves that the memo and claim existed; it does not automatically prove the claim was true. A historical intelligence file can be extremely valuable even when the event described in it is later explained.

Cyberdelia therefore separates records into evidence classes rather than throwing them into one paranormal bucket. Primary records, access copies, witness statements, sensor products, technical analysis, historical context, media reporting, and speculation should remain visibly distinct.

02 / EVIDENCE LADDER

Not all weirdness earns the same weight.

The question is not whether a source is interesting. It is what the source can actually establish.

LEVEL 1

Anecdote

A witness describes an event. Useful for discovery, pattern finding, chronology, and identifying where better records may exist. Weak for reconstructing exact speed, range, size, or mechanism without corroboration.

LEVEL 2

Contemporaneous documentation

Logs, radio traffic, written reports, photographs, timestamps, maintenance records, weather records, and other evidence created close to the event. These can constrain later storytelling.

LEVEL 3

Instrumented observation

Radar, electro-optical, infrared, satellite, telemetry, acoustic, magnetic, or other sensor data. Stronger only when calibration, geometry, sensor mode, platform state, metadata, and processing history are known.

LEVEL 4

Multi-sensor correlation

Independent instruments observing the same event can collapse ambiguity if timestamps and geometry are synchronized. “Multiple sensors” is not magic; the sensors must actually constrain the same hypothesis.

LEVEL 5

Recoverable physical evidence

Material, environmental effects, or repeatable measurements with documented chain of custody and independent analysis. Extraordinary claims live or die on provenance here.

LEVEL 6

Repeatability

The gold standard. A phenomenon that can be measured again under known conditions moves from story to science.

03 / SENSOR LITERACY

The camera is not a neutral eyeball.

A large fraction of serious UAP analysis is really the study of geometry, sensor behavior, image processing, tracking logic, platform motion, and missing metadata. The impressive-looking clip is often the beginning of the work, not the end.

Angular motion is not physical speed.

A small object close to a sensor and a large object far away can move through the same number of pixels per second while having radically different real-world velocities. Without range, geometry, and camera parameters, apparent motion can be badly misleading. A moving aircraft carrying the camera adds another layer: the line of sight changes because the platform is moving even if the observed object is slow.

Parallax can manufacture drama.

When the observing platform moves, nearby objects appear to sweep across a distant background faster than distant objects do. This is ordinary geometry, but in cropped stabilized footage it can produce a strong impression of extreme translation. Any claim of extraordinary speed should therefore show the range assumptions, platform velocity, viewing angle, field of view, and how uncertainty propagates through the estimate.

Infrared is temperature contrast, not an x-ray of reality.

Thermal imagers display radiance through a sensor, optical train, processing pipeline, palette, gain mode, and atmospheric path. Blooming, glare, clipping, auto-gain, focus, compression, and display settings can alter the apparent size and shape of a target. A bright blob is not necessarily shaped like the bright blob.

Radar has its own mythology.

Radar can provide powerful range and velocity information, but it also has clutter rejection, track initiation logic, sidelobes, multipath effects, propagation anomalies, electronic warfare vulnerabilities, thresholding, and classification filters. “Radar confirmed it” is useful only when we know what the radar measured and how the track was produced.

Metadata is evidence.

Sensor model, mode, focal length, field of view, frame rate, exposure, gain, platform position, platform attitude, target designation, timestamp, compression history, and processing steps can matter more than the visible object. NASA’s 2023 independent UAP study emphasized exactly this problem: many existing observations were incidental, poorly calibrated for the question being asked, or missing enough metadata to prevent strong physical conclusions.

04 / HYPOTHESIS LADDER

Spend ordinary explanations before exotic ones.

Not because ordinary explanations are ideologically preferred, but because they are more common and easier to test.

Compression, stabilization, optical effects, sensor modes, tracking behavior, metadata loss, transcription error.

B

Known natural phenomenon

Stars, planets, meteors, clouds, lightning phenomena, atmospheric optics, birds, insects, ocean effects.

C

Known human technology

Aircraft, balloons, drones, satellites, rockets, flares, ships, classified but conventional platforms.

D

Adversary or developmental technology

Unfamiliar systems, electronic warfare, signature management, autonomous platforms, experimental aerospace technology.

E

Deliberate deception or fabrication

Hoaxes, edited media, misrepresented provenance, influence operations, deliberate spoofing.

F

Unknown natural or technological mechanism

A residual category for observations that survive the previous layers. This is where the Technology Desk begins asking what physics and engineering would have to be true.

05 / GOVERNMENT RECORD MAP

Read the bureaucracy as a time series.

The public record is not one continuous investigation. It is a sequence of programs, mandates, offices, hearings, reports, and archival releases created under different assumptions.

Cold War programs

Project Sign, Project Grudge, Project Blue Book, intelligence memoranda, air-defense reporting, atomic-era security concerns, and related records show that U.S. agencies repeatedly had to distinguish unknown observations from foreign technology, misidentification, public panic, and intelligence problems. These files are valuable because they preserve how the state thought about the problem in real time. They should not be treated as a single coherent position.

The modern cycle

The 2004 Nimitz encounters became a central modern case because military aviator testimony, shipboard radar context, and infrared video entered public discussion together. The public conversation accelerated after 2017 reporting on Pentagon-linked UAP efforts and Navy videos. Congress then pushed the issue into formal reporting requirements, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence issued a preliminary assessment in 2021, and the Department of Defense established the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office in 2022.

NASA enters from the scientific side

NASA convened an independent study focused not on adjudicating old cases but on how UAP could be studied scientifically. Its 2023 report emphasized calibrated data, metadata, standardized collection, independent analysis, and the difficulty of drawing firm conclusions from sparse observations. That framework is unusually useful because it converts “what was that?” into “what would we need to measure next time?”

Hearings are records, not verdicts.

Congressional testimony matters because witnesses make claims under formal conditions and lawmakers expose disputes over access, classification, reporting, and oversight. Testimony should be preserved in full. It should also be separated from corroborating evidence. A strong archive lets a reader compare what was claimed, what documents were cited, what later evidence appeared, and what remained unsupported.

The current release stream

Cyberdelia is treating the 2026 PURSUE releases as a priority archival event. The collection spans historical and modern records, documents and media, resolved and unresolved material. That breadth is precisely why the files should be preserved as filesets rather than mined only for the most sensational clips.

08 / CASE DOSSIER TEMPLATE

Every serious case should answer the same boring questions.

Identity and provenance

What is the case called? Who assigned that name? What is the original record ID? Which agency created the source? What files exist? Are they original binaries or transcodes? When were they acquired? What is the hash? Has anything been cropped, stabilized, enhanced, compressed, or relabeled?

Observation geometry

Where was the sensor? Where was it pointed? What was the platform doing? What is known about range, altitude, azimuth, elevation, field of view, focal length, and time? Which values are measured and which are assumed?

Environment

Weather, visibility, stars and planets, satellite passes, aircraft traffic, balloon activity, military exercises, local terrain, sea state, atmospheric ducting, and other context should be checked before exotic mechanisms are invoked.

Competing explanations

Each explanation should state what evidence it accounts for, what it fails to account for, and what new observation would discriminate between it and its competitors. “Could be” is not enough. A useful hypothesis makes itself vulnerable.

Confidence

A case can remain unresolved because the evidence is extraordinary, because the data are insufficient, or because several ordinary explanations remain possible. Those are very different outcomes. The confidence statement should say which one applies.

Terms that cause arguments when left undefined.

UAPUnidentified anomalous phenomena. A classification of observations not yet identified, not a statement about origin.
UnresolvedInsufficient evidence or competing explanations remain. Not synonymous with extraordinary.
ProvenanceThe documented history of where a record came from and how it changed.
MetadataData about the observation or file: sensor settings, timing, platform state, encoding, location, processing and more.
ParallaxApparent relative motion caused by a change in the observer's position.
Line of sightThe direction from sensor to target. Changing line of sight does not by itself establish target speed.
TransmediumA claimed ability or event involving movement between domains such as air and water.
Null hypothesisThe baseline explanation a test attempts to reject. In UAP work, often that the observation is consistent with known natural or technological causes.

11 / WHAT WOULD CHANGE OUR MINDS?

A position that cannot lose is not analysis.

Cyberdelia should be willing to move in either direction. A case becomes less extraordinary when better geometry, metadata, environmental data, or source history produces a conventional explanation. A case becomes more extraordinary when independent calibrated measurements eliminate conventional explanations while preserving a coherent physical observation.

Claims of non-human technology would require evidence substantially stronger than ambiguity: independently verifiable material, unambiguous multi-sensor measurements, repeatable effects, well-documented chain of custody, or equivalent evidence capable of surviving hostile expert review.

That standard is not hostility to the possibility. It is respect for the size of the claim.
